All  the  slaue'ht ering  for  West  Dorset  is  done  at  a 
Slaughterhouse  situated  in  the  Parish  of  Symondsbury.  The  carcases 
are  inspected  on  every  day  that  slaughtering  takes  place  by  a 
veterinary  surgeon  appointed  by  the  four  Districts  concerned.

suDDlies  the  Parishes  of  Litton  Cheney,  Burton  Bradstock, 

Bradpole,  Walditch,  Bo thenharruton  and  Syrrondsbury  with  water 
•which  is  Satisfactory  in  duality  but  not  always  in  nuantity. 

This  Water  has  been  co-ntinuouslv  chlorinated  ^ince  19^0,  exceutlne 
the  Walditch  i^-jinply,  ""he  Charwouth  sunuly  , jiT/rnod  by  the 
Rural  District  Council,  is  oerived  froin  five  shallow  sources, 
vicldins:  aDuroxir-a tely  Gallons  per  day.  This  supply  is 

also  continuously  chlorinated.  The  reraining  Parishes  are  either 
v'ithout  piped  supplies  or  are  partly  supplied  with  piped  water 
cy  private  suppli era , and  they  are  not  of  adequate  ca.pacity  for 
U'.'c  ^s  permanent  public  supplies.  Under  the  Rural  Water  Supplies 
a'lc  ^iw-’vrjge  Act  19-^^-,  obligation  is  placed  on  every  Local 
A'.ithority  to  provide  a supply  of  wholesoire  water  in  pipes  to  every 
rural  locality  in  those  districts  in  which  there  are  houses  or 
sohooDs,  provided  tnpt  it  is  practicable  and  at  a reasonable  cost 
(tne  latter  to  be  aecided  oy  tne  Minister). 

30  sarrples  were  taken  for  Dabt er iological  analysis, 
incluQing  I4  froin  Gnarmouth,  all  tne  latter  being  very  satisfactory 
except  one.  Tne  samples  from  tne  Bridport  Water  Company's  supply 
were  also  Vtry  satisfactory. 


Sewefage, 

The  drainage  in  the  district  is  very  unsat isf actory  as, 
aPai’t  from  those  areas  immediately  adjacent  to  Bridport  Borough, 
the  re'iialnder  of  the  villages  on  a water  carriage  svstem 
discharne  all  the  crude  sewage  int'^  the  nearest  water  course,  with 
the  result  that  all  the  latter  are  verv  e^rossly  polluted.  This  is 
especi^llv  at  Charmouth,  Chideock,  Bradpole  and  Burton  Bradstook.

HOUSING 

Unaer  tne  Housing  of  Agricultural  Workers  War  Time 
Lmtrgency  ^ct,  4 new  nouses  were  erected  at  Askerswell.  The  rent 
cnarged  is  9/6d  per  week  including  water  rate.  The  Council  own 
4 acres  of  land  for  housing  purposes  at  Watton  also  a.  site  for  8 
houses  at  wUiitcnurch  and  a site  for  2 houses  at  Burton  Bradstook, 

During  the  year  51  houses  were  repaired  after  service 
of  Notices  and  4 cases  of  overcrowding  were  relieved.  The  number 
of  persons  concerned  in  sucn  caPes  being  24. 

The  Local  nutnority  own  87  houses  and  there  are 
approximately  1600  working  class  houses  in  the  district. 


RODENT  CONTROL 

In  conjunction  with  the  Besminster  R.D.C.,p  full  time 
Rodent  Officer  was  pppr^lnted.  A surve^'  of  the  built  up  areas  in 
the  district  was  made  aft erwhich,  those  areas  found  to  be  infested 
•^ere  sone  over  with  a view  to  the  destruction  of  the  rats.
